Sony Xperia T gets some Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean love

Apost on the Xperia blog confirms that the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean firmware update for Sony Xperia T users is finally here, adding that the development is here just a day after it reached the PTCRB site. The post adds, "The firmware is the same that was certified i.e. version number 9.1.A.0.489 and runs on the 3.4.0 kernel." Shedding more information on the update, the post adds that the update is working for those in the Netherlands.

For those not in the know, the Sony Xperia T smartphone comes equipped with a 4.6-inch HD display, Mobile Bravia Engine and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

Here is a quick look at the highlighted features of the Sony Xperia T:
  • 4.6-inch HD Reality Display powered by the Mobile BRAVIA Engine
  • LTE, UMTS / HSPA+ radios, NFC
  • 13MP fast capture camera with LED flash and a 720p HD front camera
  • Full 1080p HD video recording capabilities
  • 16GB internal memory along with a microSD card slot
  • MicroSIM
  • FM radio, MHL

Interestingly, in December last year, reports suggested that Sony had decided to provide its Xperia T users with the roll out of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ahead of its schedule. It had been revealed that the update was available for the international variant of the handset (LT30p) and the report noted that users were experiencing improvements in battery life as well as changes in image and sound quality.

Previously, Sony Mobile shared its Jelly Bean upgrade plans for a couple of its smartphones from this year. It had been announced that the Jelly Bean upgrade plans for the Xperia T, TX and V were moving forward, and these smartphones would be upgraded to Jelly Bean during February and March.

At the time of that report, Sony announced that the Xperia P, J and go smartphones would be the next in line to receive the upgrade – from the end of March. Upgrades to the Xperia S, SL, ion and acro S will follow in the weeks to come after.

At the time, Sony had announced, “We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich.” It now appears that as far as updates go, it is the end of the line for the 2011 Xperia models. Sony states that upgrading to versions higher than Ice Cream Sandwich would not guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience they expect and Sony demands. Sony will, however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases."
