Google Nexus 4 up for India pre-orders at Rs. 25,990

Google Nexus 4, the flagship smartphone from Google, which is manufactured by LG is available for pre-orders on ecommerce site Flipkart at a price of Rs. 25,990 for the 16GB internal storage variant. The estimated release date for the phone has been listed as 4th week of May. The listing displays the phone's name as LG Google Nexus 4 and mentions that the phone is covered under LG India's warranty. So, it's likely that LG is the one selling the phone and not Google. However, it's also possible that Google might start selling the phone on the India Play Store shortly. It's worth pointing out that Google had recently started selling the Nexus 7 tablet in India via the Play Store, only for Asus, the manufacturer of the tablet to start sales as well. The Nexus 4 boasts a 4.7-inch screen with 768x1280 pixel resolution. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 2GB RAM and runs Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). It comes with an 8-megapixel rear camer...

Google Maps app for iPhone steers right

I t was one of the biggest tech headlines of the year in September, Apple dropped its contract with Google, which had always supplied the data for the iPhone's Maps app. For various strategic reasons, Apple preferred to write a new app, based on a new database of the world that Apple intended to assemble itself. As everybody knows by now, Apple got lost along the way. It was like a 22-car pileup. Timothy Cook, Apple's chief executive, made a quick turn, publicly apologizing, firing the executive responsible and vowing to fix Maps. For a company that prides itself on flawless execution, it was quite a detour. Rumors swirled that Google would create an iPhone app of its own, one that would use its seven-year-old, far more polished database of the world. That was true.Google Maps for the iPhone has arrived. It's free, fast and fantastic. Now, there are two parts to a great maps app. There's the app itself - how it looks, how it works, what the featur...

Google shows respect to the founder of scientific computing

G oogle today shows respect to the Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, an English mathematician and writer by a Google Doodle dedicated to her. She is also known as the founder of scientific computing. The Countess is known for her work on Charles Babbage’s early mechanical general-purpose computer, also known as the Analytical Engine. She was born on this day in 1815 and lived for 37 years. Her notes on the Analytical Engine include what is recognized as the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine. Because of this, she is often considered the world’s first computer programmer. In 1842 Charles Babbage was invited to give a seminar at the University of Turin about his analytical engine. Luigi Menabrea, a young Italian engineer, and future Prime Minister of Italy, wrote up Babbage’s lecture in French. Babbage asked Ada to translate Menabrea’s paper into English, subsequently requesting that she augment the notes she had added to the translation. After a...

Browser wars flare again, this time for phones and tablets

SAN FRANCISCO — When Google took a video camera to Times Square in 2009 and asked passers-by what a browser is, most of the answers were hilariously incorrect, from “a search engine” to “broadband” to “Yahoo.” But even if consumers are not so sure what Web browsers are (programs like Internet Explorer and Firefox), they have become a crucial business for tech companies like Google and Microsoft. That is because they are now the entry point not just to the Web but to everything stored online, like Webapps, documents and photos. And as the cloud grows more integral, both for businesses and people, the browser companies are engaged in a new battle to win our allegiance that will affect how we use the Internet. It’s an echo of the so-called browser wars of the 1990s, when Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator fought for dominance on the personal computer. This time, though, the struggle is shaping up to be over which company will control the mobile world — with browsers...

What Is A Mobile Ecosystem?

In this ever changing mobile world the realms of possibility shift on an almost monthly basis. The increasing sophistication of handsets and their ability to connect to more devices than ever before has given rise to perhaps the most complex yet beneficial development of them all – the mobile ecosystem. But what is a mobile ecosystem? And, more importantly, how does having one benefit you? Read on for the answers to these questions, and if there’s one we haven’t covered simply pop it in comments at the bottom of the page and we will answer and add it to our guide. So, what the blazes is a mobile ecosystem? Despite sounding ridiculously complex, the concept of mobile ecosystems is actually very easy to grasp: an ecosystem is a collection of devices connected by one operating system that can work seamlessly together and share data. The starting point for an ecosystem is usually a mobile phone running a particular operating system. So, let’s say you’ve got an Android handset...
